Roswell Smith, father of settler Van C. Smith.
The railroad came through the same decade allowing the small mid-western town to thrive.
Roswell was brought to national attention in July 1947, when a rancher Mac Brazel reported to the town of Roswell that a UFO crashed on his ranch.
